Week 1

A big welcome back to the Ducklings after the long Easter break and we have jumped straight into our learning with our new topic ‘Life Cycles and Minibeasts’.

We are lucky to have received our very own caterpillars this week and we have enjoyed watching them, observing their behaviour and habits and making observational drawings as they change and grow.

In Literacy we have been listening to the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We learnt the Makaton actions to go along with the story and we practised retelling the story together. In our playful learning activities we had a go at writing a list of food that the hungry caterpillar eats and it was fabulous to see the Ducklings applying their phonic skills to sound out and write new words.

We have also been practising our red words and now have lots of red word speed reading kings and queens! Each Duckling should now have a red word bookmark so that they can practise reading and writing these at home too.

In Maths, we have been practising our counting skills and strategies. The children were given opportunities to hear and practise key differences in the number names e.g. between ‘teen’ and ‘-ty’ number and also to ‘count on’ from different starting numbers. We continued this learning in our classroom routines, practising hearing, and joining in with, counts beyond 20.
