Week 3 Once upon a Time… The Three Little Pigs

This week we have continued with our topic ‘Once Upon a Time’ and have shared the traditional tale of The Three Little Pigs. We have enjoyed joining in with the repeated refrains when retelling the story; “Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin… Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down!”

The Three Pig’s story introduced us to the concept of halving and sharing during our number learning this week. We imagined that two of the pigs had discovered an apple in the woods, but there was only one to share between the two pigs. We noticed that when we cut an apple in half, we split it into two equal parts. We then used this knowledge to help us with finding half of a whole number. We used part-whole models to support us with this. We started with the whole number (an amount of sticks found in the woods) and then shared the sticks into two equal parts by saying ‘one for me, one for you’ – this was a great way of checking that each part had the same amount so we could identify one half! We then had the problem to solve when the third pig arrived and we needed to share the whole number of sticks between 3. It was great to discuss why some numbers could be shared into equal groups and others had one left over!

In phonics, we have now learnt all of our Set 1 and 2 sounds! We are doing amazing with applying our sounds when reading and writing. We are now going to spend the last few weeks revisiting these sounds so we will be ready to learn some more in Year 1 :)

Enjoy the long weekend Ducklings and we shall look forward to participating in our first Bramber sports day next week :)
