How can I help my child learn these facts?
To help your child learn these facts it is important to ensure your child firstly has a concept of number. To support them with this you can use objects to help them count, such as beads, toys or pasta. A visual representation of number is what many children need to be able to imagine or get a feel for the value of each number. Remember, this doesn't have to always be a sit down operation, after all maths is all around us! How many peas do you have left? There are two on your fork and four on your plate.
Whilst we work on a range of problem solving activities across a range of mathematical topics in year one developing fluency with these facts will be the foundation of much of their future learning.
Once your child has a secure understanding of number they will find the abstract an easier concept to understand. Try to practise recalling these facts in the car or on the way to school. You will need to go over these again and again for your child to remember them on a long term basis.
For additional practise, I recommend 'Hit the button' an online interactive game to support instant recall of mathematical facts. It includes quick fire questions on number bonds, doubling and halving. It is a free game on the topmarks website but can be downloaded for a fee on a smartphone or tablet.
It is designed for 6-11 year olds and can also be used to sharpen a child's recall on multiplication, division and square numbers.
