Our Intent for Maths at Bramber

“Everyone a mathematician”

The intent of our mathematics curriculum is to cater for the needs of all and to maximise the development of every child so that all our learners love maths and see themselves as mathematicians. We aim to provide high quality activities with a focus on fluency, reasoning and problem solving; these incorporate sustained levels of challenge and enable children to explore maths in depth and use mathematical vocabulary to reason and explain their thinking. A wide range of mathematical resources are used and children are taught to use concrete, pictorial and abstract (more ‘formal’) methods to represent their understanding. Children are taught to explain their choice of methods and develop their mathematical reasoning skills. We encourage resilience and acceptance that struggle is often a necessary step in learning.

Our subject leader works closely with the other Maths subject leaders at our East Worthing Schools Partnership, including our High Schools. As a group, we have agreed that the White Rose Maths Hub Progression in Calculation documents clearly demonstrate the development of number and calculation skills to ensure secure understanding which can then be used and applied. We consider the needs of our pupils by using the NCTEM Ready to Progress guidance and resources to support our planning and teaching of mathematics.
