PE Curriculum at Bramber
Intent
At Bramber, we aim to provide a PE curriculum that all pupils from Reception to Year 6 can succeed in. We strive to support each child’s physical, emotional, social and moral development in a safe, fun and supportive environment. Our children experience a range of physical activities, which helps them to discover the positive impact exercise and nutrition have on their health, fitness and wellbeing.
We strive for a curriculum that is accessible to all of our children, and we encourage each individual to be brave and ambitious when learning. We inspire our children to use the tools and understanding we provide at Bramber to make positive fitness and lifestyle choices whilst at school and afterwards.
At Bramber, we are dedicated to ensuring our children enjoy learning new skills by offering dynamic, varied, high-quality lessons that promote our Bramber values. It is extremely important to us that children develop an understanding of fair play, honest competition and good sporting behaviour – showing belonging when individually participating, playing in a team or supporting others in training. We encourage our children to show resilience, have a respectful, competitive nature, take responsibility for their healthy lifestyle and use sporting achievements to increase their self-esteem.
Implementation
Physical Education develops the pupil’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. Physical Education promotes an understanding in pupils of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and promotes attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling them to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives. We develop our PR lessons with supporting planning documents from ‘Get Set PE.’
Broad and Balanced Curriculum
We aim to ensure we provide a broad and balanced curriculum which includes comprehensive coverage of the National Curriculum for Physical Education in KS1 and KS2, and is in line with the Early Learning Goals in the EYFS.
Daily Physical Activity / Active Learning
We aim to promote being active every day with the use of focused games and interaction with children at lunchtimes, and throughout the day. To make sure we are always focused on the right choices for a healthy and active lifestyle.
Cross Curriculum Links Where possible,
Links will be made to current topics in science and RHE to make sure the children have an understanding of the impact of exercise on their physical and mental health and how it supports us in leading a healthy lifestyle.
Impact
By the end of their learning, pupils will be able to talk enthusiastically and confidently about their experiences in Physical Education and explain why it is important. They will be able to link skills, techniques, and ideas, applying them accurately and appropriately, while demonstrating good control in their movements. Pupils will learn to compare and comment on the skills, techniques, and ideas used by themselves and others, using these observations to improve their own performance.
They will be able to explain key safety principles when preparing for exercise and understand the effects that physical activity has on the body. Through regular participation, pupils will acquire and develop a range of physical skills, performing with increasing awareness and confidence. They will gain an understanding of perseverance and success, learning to celebrate both their own achievements and those of others.
Pupils will also learn to take initiative, lead activities, and focus on improving their performances. They will have opportunities to excel in a broad range of physical activities and develop an understanding of how to lead healthy, active lives while making positive lifestyle choices. Through their experiences, pupils will cultivate positive attitudes towards participation in physical activity and embed core sporting values such as honesty, determination, teamwork, passion, self-belief, and respect. By doing so, they will have acquired the appropriate age-related knowledge and skills to support their ongoing physical development.
