WB 13.04.26
This week in Chaffinch Class
🌟 Stunning Start
The children became history detectives! They moved around the classroom, examining a range of clues to uncover information about our new topic, The Great Fire of London.
They did a fantastic job of looking closely at the evidence and were able to discover when and where the fire started, who was responsible, and began to understand why it became such a devastating event.
📚 English & History
We have been learning about timelines and how they help us to organise events in chronological order. The children practised using dates to sequence key moments in history.
They then created their own timelines of the Great Fire of London and used descriptive language to write about the events, bringing the past to life through their writing.
🔢 Maths
In Maths, the children have started their fractions topic. We have been learning about equal parts and how to recognise and make a half of an object or amount. The children have shown great understanding when sharing objects and identifying halves in different contexts.
🔬 Science
We have begun our materials topic. The children went on a materials hunt around Blue Wing to identify different items and the materials they are made from.
We also discussed the suitability of materials for different purposes, thinking carefully about why certain materials are used for particular jobs.
🎨 Art
In Art, we began our new topic, ‘Be an Architect’. We looked at different buildings from around the world and discussed their features.
The children then had the opportunity to explore detail through line drawings, carefully observing shapes and structures. They did a fantastic job!
💻 Computing
In Computing, we are learning about algorithms. The children will be using Bee-Bots to understand the importance of clear instructions and how these are used in technology.
They are beginning to see how precise commands are needed to make things work correctly.
🧠 RSHE
In RSHE, we have been thinking about a growth mindset and how we can change our narrative when approaching challenges.
We explored phrases such as “I can’t do this” and “I’ve done enough”, and discussed how we can reframe these thoughts in a more positive and resilient way.
✏️ Spelling
In Spelling, we are focusing on the Year 2 common exception words. These are words that children are expected to spell correctly in most of their writing in order to be working at age-related expectations by the end of Year 2.
These words are attached at the bottom of this blog, so you can practise them at home with your child.
