This Week in Kingfisher Class 🌟

It has been another exciting week of learning in Chaffinch Class!

English 📖
The children have been thoroughly enjoying our new class text, The Jamie Drake Equation. We have read the first few chapters and have been inspired by the story's observatory setting. Using rich vocabulary and descriptive language, we have begun writing our own setting descriptions based on this fascinating location.

Maths ➗
Having mastered tenths, we have now moved on to hundredths. The children have been exploring different ways to represent and compare hundredths using place value charts, diagrams and practical resources.

Science 🔬
This week, we conducted an exciting investigation into friction. Using a force meter, we measured the force needed to move an object across different surfaces and recorded our results in newtons. We then analysed which surfaces created the most and least friction.

History 🚀
Our new Space Expedition topic is underway! We have been learning about the invention and development of the telescope and the significant impact it has had on astronomy. As part of our learning, we even had the opportunity to observe a live telescope in action.

Design and Technology 🛠️
The children have started their Moon Buggy project. We researched the Lunar Rover and explored the key features needed for a vehicle to travel successfully across the Moon's surface. We are already beginning to think like engineers!

Art 🎨
In Art, we continued our typography unit, experimenting with letter design through the use of patterns, size, shape and style. The children showed great creativity as they explored how different design choices can change the appearance and impact of lettering.

Next Week in Kingfisher Class 🌟

We have another exciting week of learning ahead!

English 📖
In The Jamie Drake Equation, we will continue exploring the story while developing our understanding of parentheses. The children will learn how brackets, dashes and commas can be used to add extra information to their writing and make it more engaging for the reader.

Maths ➗
We will be learning to describe and write hundredths as decimal numbers and will practise comparing and ordering decimal numbers with hundredths using a range of practical and written activities.

Science 🔬
Our focus will be on air resistance. The children will investigate and identify the effects of air resistance and explore how it can slow moving objects down.

Design & Technology 🛠️
As part of our Moon Buggy project, we will be developing our design criteria, considering the features and requirements needed for a successful vehicle that can operate on the Moon's surface.

History 🚀
We will continue our Space Expedition topic by finding out about the early years of space exploration between 1940 and 1970. The children will learn about key events, discoveries and technological advances that helped pave the way for modern space travel.

RSHE 💻
This week, we will be learning about online safety and understanding that some people may share information online to manipulate our actions or influence our thinking. We will discuss how to stay safe, think critically and seek help from trusted adults when needed.
