Geography Curriculum at Bramber
Intent
At Bramber Primary School, our Geography curriculum aims to inspire pupils’ curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. We want our children to develop an understanding of diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, together with an awareness of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
Through Geography, pupils will build a sense of place and identity—beginning with their local environment and expanding to a global perspective. Our intent is to equip all children with the geographical knowledge, skills, and vocabulary needed to understand the interconnectedness of the world and to develop a sense of responsibility for its future.
Implementation
Geography is taught through a carefully planned and sequenced curriculum that ensures coverage of the National Curriculum objectives and progression of skills across all year groups.
- Knowledge progression: Learning begins with children’s immediate surroundings, moving from local studies to regional, national, and global contexts as they advance through the school.
- Skill development: Pupils learn to ask and answer geographical questions, use maps, atlases, and digital technologies, interpret data, and conduct fieldwork to deepen their understanding.
- Cross-curricular links: Geography learning is enriched through connections with History, Science, and English, as well as through outdoor learning experiences and visits that bring the subject to life.
- Inclusion: Lessons are designed to engage all learners, providing support and challenge so that every child can achieve success and develop confidence as a young geographer.
Impact
By the time children leave Bramber Primary School, they will have:
- A secure understanding of key geographical concepts, vocabulary, and processes.
- The ability to think critically about the relationship between people and the environment.
- Developed map, fieldwork, and enquiry skills that enable them to investigate and interpret the world around them.
- A curiosity and respect for different cultures and places, alongside an appreciation of their role as global citizens.
Our pupils will leave Bramber Primary equipped not only with geographical knowledge and skills but also with a lifelong sense of wonder about the world and a commitment to caring for it responsibly.
