Maths in Early Years

Mastering Number in Reception

At Bramber, Reception children take part in the NCETM Mastering Number programme. This national project, developed by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM), is designed to give children strong foundations in early maths.

Through short, engaging daily sessions, children explore numbers, patterns, and relationships using practical resources such as counters, rekenreks and real-life examples. The focus is on developing fluency with numbers to 10, building confidence in counting, recognising quantities, and beginning to understand how numbers fit together.

The programme encourages children to explain their thinking, use mathematical language, and apply their understanding in everyday situations. By developing these essential skills in Reception, children are better prepared for future maths learning and more confident in using numbers in their play and daily life.
